Interested in learning the basics? Nickel City Roller Derby has got you covered!
Our 7 week course will teach you the confidence to skate, stop, fall, jump, transition, skate backwards, and more!
These skills are considered 'the basics' before the onramp to Roller Derby, or you can take the skills you've learned to the streets!
Program fee is $120, plus ~$50 for insurance sold separately. (Please see payment breakdown and instructions below.)
WHEN? May 14, 2026, and is held weekly on Thursday nights 6:30pm - 8pm
WHERE? 300 Wessex Street (NCU Curling Club)
An informational night will be held on Thursday, April 23rd for questions regarding equipment, fitting sizes, etc. from 7:30pm-9:30pm.
Required equipment:
- Quad roller skates (no roller blades, sorry...)
- Helmet
- Safety pads, including Wrist Guards, Elbow Pads & Knee pads. (hard capped)
- Mouth Guard - Thin, moldable mouth guards (SISU) can be purchased at SportChek or Skaters Edge
***These items are available for rent (minus the mouthguard), however sizes and quantities are limited. Purchasing your own equipment is highly encouraged. You will not be permitted to participate without FULL equipment.
If you need help finding equipment, please attend our info night on 23-April!!
We recommend buying quality equipment for the best protection, and find that purchasing cheap items off Amazon are a waste of money. For safety pads, we recommend the following brands: Killer 187, Triple 8, S-One, Scabs, and Pro-Tec to name a few.
There are a few vendors recommended you can search their websites below:
- Kijiji or Facebook buy/sell groups can sometimes have great deals as well.
In order to sign up for our next intake, we require the following:
- You must be 18+
- Registration form (below) to be completed
- Payment of $120 to be e-transferred to finances@ncrd.ca
- Insurance MUST be purchased through WFTDI prior to the program starting. You WILL NOT be able to participate without it.
Please complete the following form to register for our program. (only those with payments and insurance completed will have a spot secured.) If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to us at recruiting@ncrd.ca or message us on Facebook.
