Seattle demands rent control and tenant protections now!
We, the undersigned, demand that politicians immediately adopt bold measures to make Seattle affordable for all. Seattle is in the throes of a stunning and unprecedented affordable housing and homelessness crisis. Skyrocketing rents are driving working-class households, seniors, students, and especially working families of color out of our city. The for-profit market, dominated by real estate speculators, big developers, and corporate landlords, has utterly failed us.
We need rent control.
1. We call on the Seattle City Council to adopt Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s measure calling for comprehensive, citywide rent control without corporate loopholes, designed to take effect the moment the state Legislature lifts the ban on rent regulation.
2. We call on the Seattle City Council to provide urgent protections to all renters against exorbitant rent increases, by adopting Councilmember Sawant’s Economic Evictions Assistance Ordinance.
