The Pioneer Valley Coral & Natural Science Institute (PVCNSI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization developed to assist in implementation of innovative and transformative projects through capacity building, analysis, strategic communications and community based research. PVCNSI also recognizes the importance and need of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields for enhancing economic and community development. In order to create the wide ecosystem of learning, support economic community development, and augment the scientific and entrepreneurial environment in Western Mass, PVCNSI has launched a STEM education initiative, shared laboratory space and coral propagation facility.
PVCNSI has developed a strategy to support historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups – African Americans, Latina/os, and women, which are considered underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. PVCNSI has created community based laboratory space and equipment for high school students, which provides a one-of-a-kind, hands-on educational experiences in marine biology, environmental science, biology and chemistry and ignite interests in science focused career paths and support their pursuit.
Internships include assisting in creation of independent, capstone projects and redesigning of science courses in marine biology, environmental science, biology and chemistry and independent research projects for Natural Science Clubs (afterschool program). Research projects will be complementary to the high school programs and will serve as a resource for innovation in course redesign.
