Description
Climate change has major implications for the planning and design of many types of projects. Climate-related events such as heat waves and flooding, as well as more gradual changes in average climate, can affect the condition and performance of project infrastructure and can change the effects of the project on the environment. While climate conditions have long been considered in project planning processes, typical practices do not yet adequately address the effects of climate change.

This webinar will present a set of best and emerging practices for addressing this in Environmental Assessments (EAs), based on a recent report published by the Ontario Centre for Climate Impacts and Adaptation Resources and Risk Science International. Also important, but not addressed here, are the effects of the project on climate change through greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

About the Presenter
Dr. Philip Byer is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering and the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto. His teaching, research and professional work has focused on environmental impact and risk assessments, including work aimed at improving the consideration of climate change in EAs. He is co-author of a report titled Best Practices for Consideration of the Effects of Climate Change in Project-Level Environmental Assessments and was principal author of the International Association for Impact Assessment’s Climate Change in Impact Assessment - International Best Practice Principles.

In addition to his university work, Dr. Byer has been a member of various advisory committees such as the Federal EA Review Panel for a proposed mine in Northern Ontario (2011-2014), and the Ontario Environmental Assessment Advisory Committee (Chair, 1986-95), which carried out public consultations and advised the Minister of the Environment on controversial projects, and policy and legislative changes.
