One of these things is not like the others,

One of these things just doesn't belong,

Can you tell which thing is not like the others

By the time I finish my song?

Thanks for playing Odd One Out with us.We'll give you a list of four GoPo terms and your job is to figure out which one does NOT belong, and why!Your job is to make a claim about which of the four things doesn’t belong and then support your claim with some convincing reason that your answer is correct.
Example:
Which one does NOT belong and WHY?
0 points
Clear selection
Explanation
Correct Answer
(Claim) The Ministry of Magic does NOT belong because (support) The Ministry of Magic is not one of the three branches of the US government…yet!!!!! Expecto Patronum!

Score
One Point! You would receive one point for this answer because the support for your claim was accurate, logical, and on topic. By the way, your claim is only as good as your support. Also, any claim can be correct, if the support is strong enough. Now that you know the answer, let’s try another one.

Which one does NOT belong and WHY?
0 points
Clear selection
Explanation
Correct Answer

(Claim) - An anteater does NOT belong because (support) an anteater has never been impeached, but the others have.

Score

One Point! You would receive one point for this answer because the support for your claim was accurate, logical, and on topic. Remember, we are more interested in the why (support) than the what (claim).  The teacher will award points for ingenuity and original thinking.
One more example.

Which one does NOT belong and WHY?

New York Times v. U.S.

Engel v. Vitale

Tinker v. Des Moines

Schenck v. U.S.

Answer:

(Claim) The thing that does not belong is Schenck because (support) it is the Supreme Court case above that expanded the government’s power through the clear and present danger doctrine, whereas the other three cases limited the government’s power and increased the rights of the people.

Score

One Point!

Alright already, let's play!

Remember: If you can be thoughtful, knowledgeable, persuasive, creative, and ingenious you might just be crowned the oddest one out champion!

Variations of play

Odd One Out is great fun solo or in teams. After playing one round with our questions, ask students to make up their own questions: a list of 3 GoPo things that go together and one that doesn’t. Then have students switch their sets of four with others and solve for WHY. Students can write their questions on a big piece of chart paper, on the board, or on a shared google doc projected on the overhead. I also like to play a lightning round where the students try to stump me with their Odd One Out questions that I only have 20 seconds to solve. Please share any sets you have to stump me and let the games begin.
