Join Sen. Heather Steans in the fight for education equality
Illinois has one of the most inequitable school funding formulas in the nation, forcing many schools to cut programs, lay off teachers and use outdated resources. The situation in our Chicago Public Schools, where 87 percent of students come to school from low-income households, is among the most dire.

Legislation I supported as it passed the Senate recently will update our antiquated school funding formula, ensuring that the distribution of state resources to school districts is based on the needs of their students and the ability of local communities to meet those needs. It will also help CPS, which is the only district in Illinois in which the state doesn't cover pension costs. Senate Bill 231 will move us toward pension parity and help CPS recover financially.

The quality of students’ education should not depend on where they live. We need education funding reform now to ensure all Illinois students are given the same opportunities.

Now it's up to the House to act on the legislation we've sent them. Join me in the fight for education equality by signing my petition below to encourage our state representatives support quality education for all.
