Dear Duke University Health System and Duke Regional Hospital Team,
We wanted to express our deepest gratitude for your remarkable achievement in receiving the prestigious Baby-Friendly® Designation for Duke Regional Hospital. Your dedication and commitment to promoting optimal infant feeding support in the first days of a newborn's life through the implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are truly commendable.
This achievement reflects your unwavering dedication to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Overcoming challenges during a global pandemic, ensuring the availability of educational resources, and demonstrating collaboration across a vast geographical area in the Triangle are all remarkable feats that have contributed to Duke Regional Hospital's well-deserved recognition.
Breastfeed Durham is particularly impressed with your focus on addressing health disparities, especially during the month of October. As we recognize both Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the importance of breastfeeding in breast cancer prevention, we applaud your efforts to combat health disparities for women head-on. The correlation between breastfeeding and breast cancer prevention is significant, and your commitment to decreasing breast cancer mortality disparity rates is commendable.
The statistics from the American Cancer Society highlight the critical need for continued efforts to close the gap in breast cancer mortality rates among different racial groups. According to the National Institute of Health The risk of breast cancer is reduced by 4.3% for every 12 months of breastfeeding, this is in addition to the 7.0% decrease in risk observed for each birth. Duke Regional Hospital's commitment to the Baby-Friendly® initiative is a vital step towards achieving health equity.
As we look ahead, we are eager to learn about Duke University Health System's plans to pursue the Baby-Friendly® Hospital designation across all the birthing hospitals within the Duke system. We believe that extending this initiative to a broader scale will have a profound impact on perinatal health outcomes, and we are excited to see how Duke's leadership in this area continues to make a difference.
We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the entire Duke Regional Hospital team for their dedication and hard work in achieving this milestone. Your efforts are making a positive impact on the health and well-being of families and babies in our community, and we are grateful for your commitment to excellence.
Sincerely,
Breastfeed Durham and Community Advocates from Across the Triangle
