Parade of Giants Call for Artists

presented by
La Reunion TX and the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce

    WHAT

On Saturday March 3rd, 2012, La Reunion TX and the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce are producing the "Parade of Giants" as one of eight Bridge-o-Rama Signature Events celebrating the opening of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. This one-of-a-kind parade will feature local artists and community groups collaborating to create artist-designed, over-sized puppets of historical figures from West Dallas. The Parade of Giants is meant to symbolize a visual history of figures who have made a lasting impression on the culture and narrative of West Dallas. As these grand creatures make their way across the new bridge we hope to inspire knowledge and mark the past and present significance of West Dallas as an integral part of the greater city vision.

    ARTISTS

We are hosting a call for artists to join in this original workshop program to learn, design, and create an over-sized art puppet. Don’t know how to create a giant puppet? La Reunion TX will be hosting a learning workshop on January 14, 2012, where artists will learn how to simply and effectively build and decorate their projects. The parade will consist of about 15 puppet figures total. Each artist will oversee the creation of one puppet with a team of six volunteers from the sponsor community group to assist you. As lead artist, you will each receive a $225 stipend and also have the the cost of materials covered for construction. You will get to attend a private workshop where you will learn best practices on how to create these fantastical creatures and have a large studio warehouse provided for construction and storage of your projects. Artists will also be video recorded, photographed and interviewed during the process along with their puppets for media release. Artists will be selected by the La Reunion TX jury panel once they have completed this submission form. Artists will be notified of their acceptance into the Parade of Giants no later than January 6, 2012.

Deadline for Application: January 3rd, 2012 Artist Acceptance Notification: January 6th, 2012 Learn to Build Workshop: January 14, 2012, 3pm-6pm at Oil & Cotton in Oak Cliff Construction Workshop: February 4th AND 25th, 2012. Workshop warehouse will be available to artists all day. Parade of Giants: 1:30pm Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

    CREATING YOUR GIANT

At the Learn to Build workshop you will be instructed on how to create your puppet. Puppets can be made easily out of cardboard, chicken wire, fabric, and simple pole systems. Since these giants will be marched through West Dallas and onto the bridge, it is best to keep them as light and simple as possible. Artists will be tasked with designing and building the face and body of the giants, then dressing and decorating them. The workshop will feature how-to videos and a hands-on guide to assist you in design and construction.
