Cosmos Developer Questionnaire - Decentralists DAO

Dear Cosmos Builders,

All in Bits (AIB) sees an immediate need to form a DAO to move Cosmos Hub operations on-chain. We are committed to carrying out the necessary research and work to facilitate development and funding, and improve discourse, organization management, and conflict resolution by supporting the creation of the Decentralists DAO. Its creation is part of our focus to reduce the risk of centralization and enable transparent operations.

The Decentralists DAO aims to organize itself into a set of tightly aligned sub-DAOs dedicated to specific areas, with the first being the Decentralists Engineering Team (DET). Creating very specific decentralized units will ensure the right people are involved in the right issues to help advance the Hub’s development openly and effectively and to move away from centralized coordination efforts. The intent is that the funding for the DAO will be paid for by smart contract logic secured by ICS. For more information on AiB's commitment to the Cosmos Hub, read our Cosmos Forum post.

The Decentralists DAO, with support from All in Bits initially, has two initial missions:

Mission One: Inter-branch Reconciliation

  • Establish a transparent, collaborative, and inclusive information-sharing process by maintaining and updating a list of current and future Cosmos-SDK, Gaia, and Tendermint forks, creating a taxonomy of alternative repos. Why is this directory important?
  1. To improve the connectivity of the Cosmos builder community
  2. To get better visibility over upgrades and security updates or patches
  3. To showcase the amazing projects and customized work that has been done
  4. To improve collaboration between projects and have a way for the Inter-Branch team to suggest and push developments
  5. To identify features that interest the community of builders
  • Additionally, NewTendermint will develop and release Tendermint2, a more minimal version of the original Tendermint Core (to be rebranded Tendermint++). Tendermint2 is designed to endure by focusing on simplicity of design, minimal code, minimal dependencies, modular dependencies, and completeness. This team will suggest changes upstream based on their work and port necessary fixes from Tendermint++ to Tendermint2.
Mission Two: Alternative Implementation of ICS

  • With the rollout of ICS, the value capture for this model becomes even greater as the Cosmos Hub lends security to an increasing number of chains in exchange for transaction revenue. Given the importance of solving ICS for the business model of the Cosmos Hub, NewTendermint and AIB will commit resources to either vet the existing ICS work or create an alternative implementation of ICS hosting by the DET.
AIB, as the first contributor to the Decentralists DAO, is looking for feedback from Cosmos developers who have forked the Cosmos-SDK, Gaia, and/or Tendermint++ repos, especially in relation to the Inter-Branch Reconciliation taxonomy project. We believe this is an important first step in understanding the needs, wishes, and pain points of Cosmos builders.

We'll be hosting discussions and updating you on the progress of the Decentralists DAO, so watch out for our email.
