Philippians Bible Study (Led by Terry Bevill) 6 Weeks (Zoom only)
Paul’s Letter to the Philippians is his most personal, friendliest letter, and the most joyful. The words for “joy” and “rejoice” occur more frequently in this letter than in any other book of the New Testament. Yet Paul wrote it from prison, while awaiting a trial for his life. The letter is full of challenges, both for his friends in Philippi and for us: Can we learn to be content with what we have, whether much or little? How do we align the demands of dual citizenship—as citizens of an earthly empire and a heavenly domain? How can we deal with opposition from outside the church and disagreements from within? How do we live life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ? Come and join Rev. Terry Bevill for a six session class to explore and discuss this powerful and challenging letter.
Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi by Amy-Jill Levine. (Led by Donna Gaither) 7 weeks (Zoom only)
Dr. Levine is a professor of New Testament studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and is Jewish. In this fascinating book she helps us hear the parables as first century Jews would have heard them. She invites us to recapture the newness, the provocation, the challenge, and sometimes even the humor that was there for those who first heard the stories. If you want to be shaken up a bit and look at the parables in a new way, you will want to join this study! Book Needed: Short Stories by Jesus Participant Guide. $10, can be picked up at the church office.
Intro to FUMC (Led by Becky Brown) 5 weeks. (Hybrid meeting)
Would you like to know more about our church, FUMC of Waynesville? Have you been joining us for worship and events, but would like to have detailed conversations about the church and how/where to plug in? Are you considering membership, and would like to have dedicated time to discuss the details? Please join Pastor Becky for 5 sessions: Introductions, History, Methodism, Spiritual Gifts and Talents, and Mission and Ministries of the church. We will meet masked, in person at the church, and will have a remote option on zoom - simultaneously. We look forward to getting to know you!
Serving from the Heart of God: Finding Your Gifts and Talents for Service by Carol Cartmill & Yvonne Gentile (Led by Keith Turman) 7 weeks. (Hybrid meeting)
This small group will coincide with the upcoming sermon series S.T.R.I.D.E. God’s plan for the church calls for each member of the Body of Christ to play a vital role. Sometimes we think that serving God is an obligation, a duty, and that it isn’t meant to be enjoyable. The truth is, though, that God wants us to find joy and fulfillment when we serve. That happens when we serve in a role that matches who God created us to be. In this book, Serving from the Heart, we will take a 6-week journey of self-discovery as they learn more about how the Body of Christ is intended to function, and what that means to each person. This study will lead us through assessing their spiritual gifts, talents and abilities, resources, individual style, dreams and experiences…all adding up to an enhanced capacity to serve God and neighbor. Book Needed: Serving from the Heart of God Participant Book. $12, can be picked up at the church office.
God-Centered Fitness Class (Led by Leslie Stiggins (6 weeks) (In Person and Zoom)
God has gifted us with bodies that can move, so let's honor that gift. Plus, working out is definitely better with someone. In my 6 week 45(ish) minute class in the courtyard, we will talk about faith and fitness and of course workout. My goal is for you to feel empowered, strong and sweat. Use your own body weight, a mat and some light weights (if you have them). Anyone is welcome to come and do what you can, and I will offer modifications if needed. I have been a certified fitness instructor for over a year and have been a fitness and health enthusiast for well over a decade.
I would like to lead a small group or Bible Study on Wednesdays.
