FY1 Buddy Network - BUDDY Sign Up
Following a discussion on the peer support Facebook group Tea & Empathy in 2017, we decided to set up a scheme to provide 1-1 peer support to FY1 doctors. The first year of being a doctor can be a real struggle for many reasons, and there are plenty of doctors willing to help, provide a listening ear, reassurance, debrief, drink tea together, whatever is needed. To help FY1 doctors go through the transition from being a student to being a doctor, we created the FY1 Buddy Network.

If you'd like to be a Buddy to an FY1 starting in August 2020, please complete this form to be added to our database of buddies. Buddies will be allocated to an FY1 as FY1s sign up which can be throughout the year. Unfortunately some buddies may not get matched depending on the needs of the FY1s who sign up. Please don't be disheartened but keep checking your email as you could get matched at a later date. If there is likely to be a period of time where you wouldn't be checking your email (greater than 10 days) please let us know so we can avoid matching you with an FY1 during this time.

We would like to try to pair you with someone working at your hospital, or nearby (e.g. if you're a GP an FY1 in the same area as you), so you can meet face to face (if appropriate within local social distancing guidelines where you are). This isn't always possible, if we don't have any buddies in an area where there's an FY1 wanting a buddy or if the FY1 has specific additional needs. If so, we may need to pair you with a FY1 somewhere else that you could contact by phone/email/skype.

What a buddy is:
- A mentor
- A source of support
- A friendly face
- A listening ear
- Someone to help with the potentially “stupid” questions about being a doctor
- Someone to talk to after a difficult situation at work
- Someone who can potentially offer some insight from their own experiences or knowledge

If at any point you have any questions or concerns about this process please contact us on info@fy1buddynetwork.co.uk
