On September 8, the La Crosse County Administrator presented a plan to the La Crosse County Board to cut the SMRT bus program at the end of 2025 citing "low ridership" and budget deficits. The board will consider this proposal during September and October and probably vote on it some time in November. You can learn more at https:/tinyurl.com/savethesmrtpage. We are collecting signatures to present to the county board by October 31. Please sign if you agree. The Scenic Mississippi Regional Transit (SMRT) is an essential public transportation service for residents of La Crosse, Crawford, Vernon, and Monroe counties, and beyond that benefits non-drivers, employees, employers, those with disabilities, seniors, students, postsecondary institutions, businesses, youth, families, and tourists. In addition, public transportation reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution and is much safer than car travel. We, the undersigned, believe that the SMRT system should be retained. More public input is needed and more research is required to find solutions that will maintain this vital link for our region.
