2021 Off the Shelf Chicken CSA
Hello Friends and Neighbors!
We are so excited to announce that we are bringing pasture-raised meat chickens back to our farm this season!
You may remember we raised a small amount of chickens in 2018, our first season. I remember, and haven't stopped thinking about it since! They were so delicious and tasty, I can't wait to have a freezer full of chicken again.
We didn't raise chicken in 2019 and 2020 because we made the decision to focus on expanding our egg operation and we wanted to make sure we gave the hens our full attention. Now, it's 2021 and we feel confident that we've built strong systems around the farm, have a few seasons under our belt, and that we can add meat birds back into our rotation with the same level of care that we give our hens and lambs! The meat chickens, just like the laying hens, will be moved every single day to fresh grass. This keeps the birds and the soil healthy and produces a superior product for us to eat. If you've had our eggs or lamb, you know the difference I'm talking about. The coops we will use for the meat chickens are much smaller than our layer wagons, and can be maneuvered on more varied terrain. We are looking forward to being able to utilize the meat birds to bring their rich manure to new parts of the pasture where the layer coops can't go. This in turn will build soil and feed our flocks of lambs, who also graze these varied parts of the pastures. It is all apart of the bigger picture to improve the land we work on, which in turn benefits the farm and our community.
Ok, so now you know our plan, and so this is where you come in! We need a little support to get everything up and running. There are coops and brooders to build, feed to buy, and of course lots of peeping chicks to order! Not to mention chicken crates, slaughter dates, and chest freezers...
So, we're asking you to sign up for our first ever Off the Shelf Chicken CSA!
As a OTS Chicken CSA member you'll receive a fresh (never frozen) chicken straight from our fields once a month, May-September. If you've never had fresh chicken, it's a treat! The texture is different and it's generally juicier.
Our chickens will be fed a locally grown Non-GMO feed from Stone House Grain in Hudson, NY. They are moved daily to fresh grass so their diet is heavily supplemented by grass and bugs.
There will be 5 pickups on the following SATURDAYS, 9am-1pm at the Great Barrington Farmers' Market:
If you're not able to pick up at the market, we will have a 2 hour window (10am-Noon) to pickup at one of the farms we lease in Southfield, MA on SUNDAYS of the same weekend. The Sunday pickup dates are as follows:
Each CSA share is $125. (1 chicken/month, for a total of 5 chickens)
You can expect a 4.0 - 4.5lb chicken at each pickup.
We can accept payment via venmo, cash, or check (see more details below).
Your commitment to our farm is major! It helps us financially get everything we need this spring, it helps us make informed plans, and it just makes us feel really good because we know that we are farming FOR YOU.
Thank you for trusting us and for sharing in our excitement about bringing chicken back to our farm.
