Title: From babies to big kids: What do community-based recreation and movement programs offer children with disabilities?

When: Monday June 18, 2018 6:30-8:00 PM

Location: Pediatric Therapy Services, 304 North East Hood Ave, Gresham, OR 97030 (Free parking available)

Description: We know that regular physical activity and movement is good for everyone but accessing community-based opportunities to move is often challenging for our kids with disabilities. In this presentation we will explore the physical, social and emotional benefits that community based programs, such as dance classes, provide to children of all ages with disabilities and their families. We will examine the evidence surrounding this and view examples of unique movement opportunities available locally. Attendees will also be introduced to recreational resources, camps and other programs available throughout the year.

Presenters:
Kate Stribling, PT, DPT, PCS and dance researcher.
Anastasia Gamble, movement and Pilates instructor for adults of all abilities.
Savannah Lehman: Dance instructor and LEAP founder.

Objectives: Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
•Describe the physical, communication, social and emotional benefits that community based programs provide to children of all ages with disabilities and their families.
•Cite the evidence for participation in community settings.
•Describe supports therapists can offer to community coaches and teachers to help engage and empower differently-abled participants.
•Access local recreational resources, camps and other year-round programs.
