Somerville Community Growing Center Maple Project 2024 Volunteer Interest Form

The Maple Project is an opportunity for Somerville residents to connect with each other and the natural world by tapping local maple trees, boiling sap, and making delicious maple syrup.

There are lots of different opportunities to help with our two boil days -- an education boil for students takes place on March 1st (rain date: March 8th), and a public boil for everyone takes place on March 2nd (rain date: March 9th). There are also opportunities to help transport sap before the boil (January 25th to February 29th).

How would you like to be involved this season?

Volunteering shifts depend on the task, but generally are in 3-4 hour blocks

Pickup/Delivery of Sap (January 25th to February 29th): We collect sap from trees on Tufts campus and then transport that sap to a location such as the fridges at Aeronaut Brewing Co or other Somerville designation for cold storage. Depending on sap flow, there is a daily need to transport sap. This is a vital part of the sugaring process, so if you have a car and can help, it is greatly appreciated! It takes about 1/2 hour.

Maple Boil Site Prep (late Feb): Site prep and set-up entails moving the boiler, setting up the new stack pipe, wood check

Day of Site Prep (March 1 and 2) starting the fire, roping off the lawn, etc. We will have two day-long Boil Down dates: One for school groups (March 1), and one that is open to the public (March 2). Site Prep takes place early in the morning on both boil days (7:00-9:00 am).

Maple Boil Tenders (March 1, 2): We are looking for a rotation of volunteers (2-3 at a time for a minimum of two-hour intervals) to watch the fire, stir/add sap, and engage with visitors. This tends to be a photgraphed area, so it helps to be okay with being photographed.

Maple Boil Educators (March 1, 2): We need volunteers to prepare and run education stations including bark rubs, book readings, educating students and adults about maple trees and how the boil down works. Materials provided but we will always accept creative volunteers willing to add their own twist!

Maple Boil Cleanup (March 1, 2): We need folks to help put everything away and clean up after the event.

Finishing Sap and Documentation (Date TBD: Finishing Sap & Documentation: Will need a team of folks to finish boiling down the sap after both events, using a commercial stove. This team will be responsible for documenting our total amounts and transporting the finished Maple Syrup and equipment to the Growing Center.
