Disaster Relief Team Registration
Hurricane Matthew arrived September 28th dumping more than 18 inches of rain over two days. This was devastating enough then the flood waters rose above the level that Hurricane Floyd produced due to the 18-24 inches of rain received in the Raleigh area. That flood water arrived around October 7th, driving the flood waters two and one half feet above the record levels of Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Hundreds of homes in Lenoir County were flooded and many of the flood-affected areas were not zoned as high flood risks, many people had no insurance. While some will receive loans and grants from FEMA, it is simply not enough to cover the high cost of hiring professional contractors. Many will be unable to pay mortgages and repairs, and the FDIC has advised banks to give a 6-month grace period. The economy was already weak in this region, and unemployment rates are higher than average. The people of Lenoir County are strong, and resilient, but this flood hit us when many in our community were already down.

There is much to still be done for our neighbors in Kinston. “According to what we’ve seen, the number of volunteers is not what it used to be,” said Jim Kirk, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) National Associate for Disaster Response. “It appears that the large group of people that felt called to respond to Katrina and Rita in 2005, is not available now and we need to cultivate a new group to take their place and integrate them into our opportunities for engagement.” Coastal Carolina and New Hope Presbyteries are in the midst of long-term recovery, but thousands of homes remain damaged and in need of cleanup and repair.
