This year we will be expanding to have a chess club and a chess team. The club will be for players who enjoy the game, but are not serious about going to tournaments. The club will meet from 12:00 to 1:30 every Wednesday school is in session. We will have a large group lesson and time to play chess in a step ladder tournament. (See below for a description of a step ladder tournament.) All studying and homework will be voluntary for extra points. Points will also be awarded for playing games, volunteering, and behavior. Poor behavior will result in the loss of points. At the end of the year the top point earners will win a special award.
The team will be for students who wish to improve and compete in rated chess tournaments outside of school. Our team will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 although all team members will be expected to attend chess club as well. The chess team will be run much like the club but there will be homework and studying requirements. It will also require attendance at chess tournaments.Required tournaments include:-The Susan Dell'Osso Chess Fest (which will be scheduled once our Gym is completed)-The Susan Polgar Foundation's National Open for Girls and Boys on 2/27-2/28 in San Mateo www.SPFNO.com -The Lathrop Mayor's Cup in the late spring We will let team members know about other tournaments, but they are not mandatory.
Last year we held a t-shirt design competition among our chess club members. The Silva's winning design will be printed on the shirt. We will have order forms for the chess shirt sent home as soon as chess club resumes. Club members are encouraged to purchase a RiTechA chess shirt while Team members will be required to wear our chess shirt to all tournaments.
My goal is to make our chess program a national powerhouse. In order to succeed, I need parent volunteers to come and help keep an eye on the kids and help with pick-up time. Because I will be doing the instruction, we just need other parents there to make sure the kids are behaving and paying attention. Since it's after school, this is a great way to get your volunteer hours if you have younger children because you can bring them with you.
Chess will meet every Wednesday that school is in session. The last day of chess will be on May 25, 2016
