#LiberateLeah Drop the Charges Sign On
By signing on you are agreeing to have you/your organization's name attached to the following letter:

We are writing to urge the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office to drop all charges against Leah Eggleson. Leah is a 22-years-young mother of two children, daughter, sister, friend, and survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse from Snohomish County, Washington.

The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Leah with attempted murder in the first degree, assault one, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Leah spent eleven months incarcerated in the Pierce County jail before a community mobilization campaign helped to get her released on bail. She is currently on electronic home monitoring, allowing her to be home with her children and family.

In the months leading up to her arrest, Leah’s boyfriend had grown increasingly controlling, monitoring Leah’s phone, forcing her to work with him and attempting to dictate who she interacted with and when. In the days leading up to the alleged shooting incident, he held Leah hostage in his apartment for nearly 48 hours. He choked her, beat her, and repeatedly threatened to kill her. Leah was traumatized, scared for her life, and feared for the safety of her children and family.

We endorse the call to #LiberateLeah, and ask that the prosecutor recognize Leah as a victim and survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault, recognize that the person she allegedly shot as her abuser, and to take her claim of self defense seriously. Leah should not be punished for defending herself in a relationship where she experienced an established pattern of power, control, and violence. Leah deserves justice through healing from the interpersonal abuse and systemic violence she has survived. Her healing is best supported by community resources for survivors and by remaining close to her children, family, and loved ones.

As organizations and individuals working to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence, we urge the prosecution to consider how compounding traumas and systems failures inform this case. Specifically, we call on the prosecution to drop the charges so that Leah can heal with the support of her family and community.
