2019 NextGen Regional Internship Program
The NextGen Regional Internship Program provides a paid internship experience to youth and young adults ages 16-21. Prior to entering the internship, participants will attend over 30 hours of required jobs skills and workplace readiness training lead by career coaches and working professionals.

Program Requirements:

-Applicants must reside in Chesapeake, VA, Norfolk, VA or Portsmouth, VA.
-Applicants must be able to commit to attend the required 30 hours of training prior to beginning the internship.
-Applicants must be able to commit to be in town and available to work 20 hours a week, every week, between July 1, 2019-September 1, 2019.
-Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States of America.

Space is limited in this program.

Priority Will Be Given to Youth with One or More of the Following Barriers:
a. Recipient of Free or Reduced Lunch
b. Offender
c. Homeless
d. Foster Care
e. Pregnant or Parenting
f. Disability

Application Process
Please note- this application has been reopened until May 17, 2019 at 5:00pm est.

Stage One: Application, January 3, 2019 - March 11, 2019

The Application will be open from January 3, 2019 - March 11, 2019. Applications must be submitted no later than 11:59pm on March 11, 2019. Late applications will not be considered.

Completed Applications MUST include the following:
-Online application.
-Resume and personal statement (see application for details) emailed to youthcareercenter@vcwhamptonroads.org

Stage Two: Interviews, March 25, 2019 - April 12, 2019

NOTE- Chesapeake Interviews have been rescheduled!

Interviews will occur between April 1,, 2019 - April 30, 2019. Interview locations will be announced no later than March 1, 2019.

-Interviews will be held in Norfolk during the week of April 1, 2019.

-Interviews will be held in Portsmouth during the week of April 8, 2019.

-Interviews will be held in Chesapeake during the week of April 22, 2019.

Applicants interviewed will be required to bring documentation of:
-Locality of residence
-Right to work (if not a US citizen)
-Barriers selected in the application.

Interviewees will be provided with a list of approved documents for verification when they are selected for the interview.

Applicants interested in positions that are with a City agency will be required to complete additional documentation during the interview process through the City’s Human Resources Department. Instructions for this process will be included with the interview confirmation.

Stage Three: Selection, April 15, 2019 - April 30, 2019

All offers of enrollment in the NextGen Regional Summer Internship Program will be made by 11:59pm on April 30, 2019. Interns will be required to provide hiring documents including: picture id and social security card. It is highly advised that applicants make sure they have access to these items prior to April 30, 2019.

Stage Four: Training, June 10, 2019- June 30, 2019

The required workplace readiness training for those selected to become NextGen Interns will be offered in Chesapeake and Portsmouth.

Stage Five: Internship, July 1, 2019- September 1, 2019

Interns will have 180 hours to work between July 1, 2019- September 1, 2019. They may work up to 20 hours per week unless additional hours are approved by the NextGen Internship Program Director. Schedules will be created at the discretion of the site supervisor.
