Dear colleagues and friends,
Centre for Financial Accountability, National Hawkers Federation, International Accountability Project, GAIA-Asia Pacific and Break Free From Plastics are inviting you to support local communities and waste workers in Gujarat, India who will be impacted by the 4 Waste to Energy Incinerators in the cities of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and Jamnagar. International Finance Corporation (IFC) has proposed a loan for 40 million USD to Abellon Clean Energy Limited for construction and expansion of these incinerator plants.
Waste-to-Energy Incinerators are extremely toxic and polluting industries which have been falsely advertised as a waste and climate solution. While they have been banned in the US and the EU, IFC is engaging in environmental racism by promoting these harmful WTE incinerators in the Global South, and in countries like India where these incinerators that burn plastics are contributing to climate pollution and directly harming marginalised communities.
In Jamnagar, Gujarat where the incinerator plant has been operational since 2021, local communities have faced issues of noise, water and air pollution along with severe health impacts due to which they filed a complaint against Abellon Clean Energy Limited to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. Due to the violations documented in Jamnagar, communities, local civil society organisations and activists are also concerned about the environmental and health impacts of the incinerators being constructed in Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Rajkot.
Taking note of the environmental and social impacts of these incinerators on local communities and waste workers, the diluted and flawed Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) reports for this project, and the violations of national environmental regulations within India along with the IFC performance standards, we strongly urge the board of directors of the World Bank Group to withdraw the financing for this project and also halt all financing for waste-to-energy incinerators.
