This form is being run by the
New Zealand Association of Scientists to give an opportunity for people who are either leaving Aotearoa New Zealand to continue working in science overseas, or leaving work in science to stay in Aotearoa New Zealand, to tell the stories of why they are leaving science.
Who should fill it out?
Anybody who is leaving scientific research in Aotearoa New Zealand, or has left the field in the last two years. This could include researchers, graduate students, technicians, and support staff. If you think this applies to you it probably does!
Why are you asking for researchers' stories? As part of our advocacy work, including our work with the
Save Science Coalition, we are looking for stories to help convey how difficult the situation is for scientists and researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand. We know it is often hard for people to speak out when they are still working, so we are hoping to gather the stories of people who are leaving. Sharing personal stories is one of the most effective ways of communicating about the state of the science and research sector.
Is the survey anonymous?
The most effective narratives are those attached to identifiable people, so we ask you to name yourself if you feel confident in doing so - but we understand if you don't. We will not publicly share named narratives without explicit permission, or identifying details from anonymous narratives.
What will you do with the information?
We will use it to inform our advocacy for scientists and in our conversations with media about the state of the research and science sector. If we want to use significant portions of what you say, or we think your personal story could inform a specific piece a journalist is working on, we will contact you. We will never share your name or contact details without your permission.
