CHR "Writing for the Public" Workshop
Thank you for your interest in this workshop. Please fill out this form to tell us more about your interest in this initiative.

Humanities scholars spend years honing their communication skills to produce research
for their peers. Those who pursue academic careers often excel in speaking at academic
conferences, giving keynotes and invited lectures, and writing monographs for academic
presses or articles for peer-reviewed journals.

However, reaching a wider audience and engaging in the work of public humanities
requires a different kind of writing, and alternative communication practices.
Are you interested in writing or speaking to the public about your research? Does your
research shed light on, or reframe, current events? Perhaps you’d like to pitch an op-ed to
a major newspaper but don’t know where to start or to whom you should send your work.
Maybe you’d even like to start your own podcast, or launch a public-facing project or
initiative of some kind but aren’t sure how to build relationships outside of the academy.

The CHR is premised on the conviction that knowledge should be a public good. Our
“Writing for the Public” workshop aims to support humanities scholars looking to
increase the visibility of their research as well as broaden their public appeal and impact.
Together, we will learn about how we can stretch ourselves beyond the training we’ve
already received as humanities researchers, growing in new directions and modifying our
writing and/or speaking styles to better engage the public at large
