PPOC Free Programs: Fall 2022
Hello TUFSD Students and Families,

The Friends of Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom (PPOC) are thrilled to once again welcome the community to the Outdoor Classroom for after school and weekend programs.

The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom is located off Route 9 across from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
The entrance is marked with a big red sign saying:
"Peabody Athletic Fields/Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom"

PEABODY TRAIL MAINTENANCE WORK DAY: OCTOBER 2
Calling the Trail Crew!
Date: Sunday, October 2 @ 10am-12 pm

Help to make sure that all the trails at Peabody ready for students and teachers to visit and learn. 
All ages welcome: Please bring work gloves (gloves also provided) and wear closed toe shoes.

GEMINIDS METEOR SHOWER COMMUNITY WATCH: DECEMBER 14
Date: Wednesday, December 14 @ 8:30 -11pm

Come out to see the Geminids, the strongest meteor shower of the year. The Geminids is a very family-friendly meteor event because you can see the light show without getting up in the middle of the night! At its peak, the Geminids display two meteors per minute, so if we're lucky and the sky is clear, you won't have to wait long to see a shooting star.  

Bring a blanket, dress warmly, invite friends and come join the Community Watch Party .
(Please park on south end of parking lot, turn off headlights quickly. This will help the folks already on the field acclimating their night vision.)


1. HALLOWEEN MAGIC AT PEABODY!

Program Leader: Peter Royston
Date: October 15 @ 11-12:30pm
Age Range: Grades 2-4 
Maximum number of participants: 15

Calling young witches and wizards! Come to join the Peabody Academy for Witchcraft and Wizardry! Under the watchful eye of your mystical professors, young people will be given supernatural cloaks to wear in class, be able to create their own magic wands, play wild, supernatural games and work together to act out otherworldly scenes!   


2. GROW YOUR OWN POLLINATOR GARDEN: Seed Saving Class

Program Leaders: Kiko Bourne and Susanne Jones 
Date: Saturday, October 1 @ 2-3:30pm 
Rain date: Sunday, October 2 @ 2-3:30pm
Age Range: Kindergarten - 2nd grade (drop-off or parent chaperone)
Maximum number of participants: 15 
Please wear closed toe shoes

Do you want to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other creatures to your garden, window ledge or porch? Then come and harvest seeds from the flowers in Peabody's pollinator garden to take home and grow! We'll collect seeds from milkweed, brown eyed susan, anise hyssop, sea oats and many more colorful flowers, and teach you how to store and sow them into your own pots or yard. There will be some drawing and decorating of envelopes as well.
 

3. SHAKESPEARE'S MACBETH IN THE WOODS

This Fall, the Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom is proud to present a special community led event: 
A production of Shakespeare's spookiest play, MACBETH! 
Led by local director and theatre educator Peter Royston, this unique production will be shown along the beautiful paths of Peabody Preserve. The performers - adults, middle school and elementary students from the community - will perform scenes from Macbeth at different points on the Preserve's winding paths while the audience follows along, going through the mysterious woods with the characters. 

Kids Grades 2 - 4 play the Witches and Wizards who tempt Macbeth into making bad decisions! Black cloaks, pointy hats and lots of spooky and fun chanting around a cauldron guaranteed! 

Kids Grades 5 - 12 play the speaking parts in Macbeth, including Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and many other cool, swashbuckling roles! 
MACBETH will also include several adult performers working alongside the kids. No prior experience or memorization needed. It is a reading performance and all actors will have a script in hand. 

4. MUSHROOM WALK 

Program Leader: Paul Sadowski
Date: Sunday, October 16 @ 11am -1pm
Age Range: for all ages who are fascinated by fungi
Maximum number of participants: 20

Paul Sadowski, an active member of the New York Mycological Society, will take you on a walk through Peabody to find fall mushrooms that are plentiful and diverse. Sadowski has been teaching curious New Yorkers about our fungi for decades and this is sure to be a thrilling, information packed adventure for the fungi minded.


5. FULL MOON NIGHT WALK

Program Leaders: Isabella Bencosme and Spiros Doupis (Sleepy Hollow Middle School 8th graders) 
Carol Vinzant and Katie Scully ( No ages given....)
Date: Tuesday, November 8 @ 5:30 -7 pm 
Rain date: Wednesday, November 9 @ 5:30 -7pm
Age Range: For all who are interested in night time exploring and listening 
Maximum Participants: 20

Come see and hear what happens at night in the woods! It gets dark early, so little ones can take a night walk and still get to bed for a school night! We will walk into the woods at dusk when we have the best shot of encountering a wide assortment of crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) and nocturnal birds and mammals. We will enjoy a relatively quiet walk but talk about and try different techniques for finding the beasts of the woods. We will be guided by the light of the Frost/Snow/Bear Moon, and also talk all things moon. 


6. SOCCER FUN WITH SLEEPY HOLLOW HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS 
( You can sign up for this program AND still sign up for 2 more programs)

Program Leaders: Sleepy Hollow Girls and Boys Varsity and JV Players
Date: Saturday November 12 @ 12-1:30 
Age Range: Kindergarten - 5th Grade
Wear sneakers, comfortable clothes to run around in and please bring a water bottle 

Come play soccer with Sleepy Hollow High School soccer players on Peabody Field.  There will be all kinds of soccer fun; skill practice, small group games, taking shots on goal against HS goalies, learning cool tricks and moves.
The big kids are looking forward to playing with younger kids and having soccer fun together.  

This will be a great event for participants who have never played soccer, are fully into AYSO, and everyone in between.
