Detroit, US

INCLUDE is a biennial international conference that is all about inclusive and people-centered design - an essential part of translating Design Thinking into Design Doing. Since 2001, this gathering has explored:
ways of bringing practitioners together growing inclusive design thinking, by involving business, citizens and communities working with designers, managers and educators developing and promoting strategies for people-centered design.

Organized in collaboration with local hosts, Include was created by the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (HHCD) based at the Royal College of Art, an organization that undertakes design research and projects with industry that will contribute to improving people's lives. Over the last 30 years, the Centre has worked on over 300 projects with nearly 200 organisations globally.

The prior nine editions of the conference have been held in London and Hong Kong, each conference regularly drawing an international audience of over 300 attendees including; designers, design researchers and educators, senior figures from industry, policy-makers and academia. The conference has consistent global appeal and provides a unique and innovative forum for the inclusive design community to engage and exchange. The Include committee is excited to premiere the first of these globally-recognised conferences in North America in 2019.

Jointly hosted by the HHCD (London), College for Creative Studies (CCS) and Design Core Detroit, Include 2019 will focus on Detroit’s strategy as a UNESCO City of Design to use Inclusive Design to drive growth in the city.

Using design to foster inclusive growth at local and global levels

The problems we face as a society are evolving and have become too complex for the systems and silos of last century to solve. Communication, empathy, and collaboration across government, industry, academia, and everyday people is the only way to develop solutions that are equitable, sustainable, and inclusive- Inclusive Design is a practice that is fit for the 21st century.

So how do you break down silos?
How can you use design to move towards shared positive change?
How do we engage diverse stakeholders? How do you foster trust and empathy?
How do you transform ‘no-people’ into ‘yes-people’?
How do you ensure meaningful participation and benefit for all?

The 2019 INCLUDE Conference will focus on how to build inclusive and effective networks to solve challenges facing citizens, communities and business through Inclusive Design.
