Information about the Eastern Ridge School Board of Directors

The Eastern Ridge School Board is an all-volunteer Board currently comprised of parents of current or past Eastern Ridge School students, and one past Eastern Ridge School teacher. The Board is particularly looking for new members with expertise in education, fundraising, and nonprofit management.

The Board has nearly completed the transition from a Founding Board to a Governing/Managing Board (see this page for a description of the stages of Board development: https://www.wwcc.edu/CMS/fileadmin/PDF/Learning_Center/Stages_of_bd_development.pdf). Current key challenges include developing strategies for increasing the number of children who benefit from the Eastern Ridge School’s educational approach, defining the roles and relationships of the Program Director and Board and building systems to empower these roles, and developing more structured fundraising efforts. In the short term, another key challenge is guiding the school as it navigates the current national pandemic and its operational and financial impacts.

Expectations of Eastern Ridge School Board Members

Board members are expected to make every effort to attend all meetings of the full Board. All Board members serve on at least one committee. Board members are also expected to make a financial contribution to the school in an amount that is meaningful to them. Members serve two-years terms and may be re-elected two times.

Board meetings are held at least once/quarter, but may be held as often as once/month. These meetings typically take place at the Eastern Ridge School at 7pm on a weeknight. Board members are expected to attend regular Board meetings in person, but arrangements can be made for online attendance under special circumstances.

Board committees include:

-- Internal Affairs - responsible for supporting and evaluating the Program Director, as well as overseeing staffing, financial, and facility decisions,
-- External Affairs - responsible for overseeing outreach, PR, marketing, and fundraising, and
-- Governance - responsible for overseeing Board recruitment, training, and evaluation, as well as development and maintenance of Board policies and documents.

The Internal Affairs committee meets in person when possible, while the other committees typically meet online. Frequency of committee meetings is set by each committee and may vary.
