The outcome of an immigration case can mean the difference between life and death. Yet people facing deportation do not have the right to legal representation in those proceedings if they can’t pay for an attorney, and most cannot. Further, due to the growing number of cases in immigration court, existing legal service providers are increasingly strained and at capacity, unable to keep pace with the number of people needing their services in absence of a federal system. This is why the Fairness to Freedom Campaign was created.
The Fairness to Freedom Act (H.R.3127) would establish a universal right to federally funded legal representation for anyone facing deportation who can't afford a lawyer on their own.
The SHIELD Act (H.R.3101) is a companion to Fairness to Freedom. It is a commonsense step to improve our immigration system by creating a grant program that will enable legal service providers to begin to close the representation gap and advance fairness and family unity.
