Cartoonist IRL Application
The Cartoon Art Museum regularly hosts professional cartoonists in the lobby of its new galleries at 781 Beach Street, San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf as part of its visiting artist program, Cartoonist IRL (In Real Life). The program allows visitors to observe cartoonists at work and engage with them directly while cartoonists are able to share their passion and process and vend their latest and most well known projects. The museum hopes that by showing creators at work in real life and having them interact with visitors that the public will gain insight into the processes of creation and see greater value in the mediums of illustration, comics and animation as true art forms.

The Cartoon Art Museum is always looking for artists to participate in the program for future dates. Participation is voluntary and gives the artist an opportunity to promote and sell their work. Artists keep and handle their own sales. Participants also receive a 1-year membership to the Cartoon Art Museum.

Artists must be able to share their process of creation during their visit. In the past creators have worked on existing projects, done new drawings or sketches and/or have brought presentations that show the development of their work through time lapsed videos, photos or layered files on their tablets and laptops.

Your participation gives the museum an opportunity to continue building community and awareness by meeting new artists and presenting them to an inquisitive public.

The Cartoon Art Museum provides a drafting table (courtesy of FLAX) for artists to use to draw or set up presentations or demonstrations of their work. An additional 6” table can be provided for selling art and merchandise. An outlet and wifi access is also available for the artist’s use. The program requires the artist to be present for a minimum of three hours (usually 1pm to 4pm) on a weekend day (usually Saturday). Alternative setups can be accommodated if discussed in advance.

The Cartoon Art Museum's mission is to ignite imaginations and foster the next generation of visual storytellers by celebrating the history of cartoon art, its role in society, and its universal appeal. Our vision is to be the premier destination to experience cartoon art in all its many forms from around the world, and a leader in providing insight into the process of creating it.
