The University of California (UC) is spearheading the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project atop Mauna Kea on the big island of Hawai'i. Despite much opposition, the Hawaiian Supreme Court has approved its permit for construction. The TMT project is important to scientists because of how high the mountain is, which will provide a closer look at space. Mauna, which means mountain, and Kea, which comes from “Wakea” the Native Hawaiian God of the Heavens, is a sacred place to Kanaka Maoli, the indigenous people of Hawai’i.

Mauna Kea is more than just a mountain, it’s the physical manifestation of the beginnings of life for its people and where the roots of Aloha culture come from. We are demanding that the UC stop construction on Mauna Kea immediately! How can a land grant institution like the UC justify taking indigenous land not granted to them? How can we include indigenous voices in the advancement of science to find an alternative?

We ask YOU to join and support this movement by filling out this petition form! Please also join us in conversation at our Town Hall on Monday, Week 8 at 6pm in Ackerman Viewpoint Room with complimentary refreshments! Sign the petition to demand the UC to divest from TMT! STAND UP and JOIN the CAUSE!
