Kidical Mass Halifax - Volunteer expression of interest

Kidical Mass Halifax is a joyful protest that brings community together and demonstrates the need for safe cycling infrastructure for kids. As our rides have grown since 2022, we can use a little more support from the community to ensure our rides go as smoothly as possible. People often ask how they can help, so consider this one opportunity to do so!

Based on our needs, we have identified key categories of support, which are described below. We are also open to suggestions from the community about what kinds of skills you bring so that we can involve you in ways that make sense.

This form is to express your interest about any or all of these roles. This form is not a commitment and we don’t expect any volunteers to show up to all of our rides. We want to know what interest and capacity exists in the community. We plan to work with volunteers to build skills, as needed.

Are you interested in helping as a snack facilitator?

We bring the snacks, but we have a lot to do at the end of the ride, so we can use some support in making sure that the bear paws, Made Good bars, and juice boxes keep flowing to hungry kiddos! This job includes things like making sure that packages get set out on the snack table, packages get opened, and garbage and recycling are separated.

Are you interested in helping to lead a ride?

We aim to make our rides responsive to the community. Do you have a route you use in your neighbourhood to get to a park or community centre? If you have local knowledge of cycling in a neighbourhood, we can work with you to plan a ride in your area. We are especially interested in routes outside of the Halifax peninsula & downtown Dartmouth.

Are you interested in helping with ride marshalling?

One of the primary responsibilities of marshals is to ride ahead to upcoming intersections and “cork” them. This means blocking intersections, directing traffic, de-escalating conflicts with drivers, and keeping the cohesiveness of the participants in place.

If you answered yes or maybe, please share any experience you have with ride marshalling (experience is not necessary, but will help us better understand where we need to help build skills):

Do you have other skills or experiences you want to bring as a volunteer? We’d love to hear how you’d like to be involved!
