Spring 2019 San Jose State University Peer Educator Application
Thank you for expressing interest in supporting your fellow SJSU students by becoming a peer educator in Peer Connections or Athletics. We are looking forward to reading your application! In order to provide the best support possible to SJSU students like you, we are selective about who we invite to join our teams of peer educators. Regardless, we are dedicated to ensuring you will have a fun and educational application experience. Hiring for Peer Connections Peer Educators will take place throughout the following dates:
- October 2018 : Recruitment - Applications due on October 31st @ midnight.
- November 2018 : Interviews
- Late November/Early December : Decisions and paperwork

Application Instructions & Information
Please read the following position descriptions carefully, including qualifications, before completing the application. You must also upload the following documents:

1) Your resume.

2) An unofficial copy of your SJSU transcript. If you have any transfer credits or if you are a graduate student with a degree from another institution, please include unofficial transcripts from your previous institution(s) as well as your current SJSU transcript.

ADDITIONALLY, TWO reference forms must be submitted on your behalf from a past instructor, employer, or other person(s) who can accurately assess your ability to be a peer educator. At least one reference form MUST be from an SJSU faculty member.

Further recommendations/references may be requested during or after your interview.

Classic Tutors
Classic tutors offer appointments and/or drop-in tutoring for a wide variety of subjects as well as undergraduate and graduate student writing. Tutors maintain a supportive environment for students to understand new and challenging material through the use of innovative learning and study strategies.
Embedded Tutors
Embedded tutors are assigned to specific course section(s) and attend every class. Outside of class, they offer tutoring appointments for students in the course. They may also double as Classic Tutors when there is low demand for tutoring in their embedded class or high demand for Classic Tutors for their subject area(s).
Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors work with students on navigating the university experience and can assist with topics such as time management, study skills, getting involved, knowing campus resources, getting connected, etc.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders attend the assigned class and facilitate workshops and study sessions outside of the regularly scheduled class time. These sessions are focused on active student involvement and incorporate both content and learning strategies.
For consideration, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

• Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or a 3.0 for 2 consecutive semesters prior to the hiring semester.
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 units as an undergraduate or at least 4 units as a graduate student.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated above-average creative problem-solving, critical thinking, patience, & decision- making skills.
• Ability to work in a diverse, team-driven environment with a variety of students, faculty, and staff.
• Friendly, respectful, and professional demeanor with a positive attitude.
• Willingness to accept supervision and constructive feedback and to implement recommendations for improvement as directed.
• Making satisfactory progress towards earning a degree.

• Must be available to attend peer educator training on weekdays January 14th - 18th, and January 22nd, 9am - 5pm. Note that all HR paperwork must be completed prior to starting training.
• Must attend weekly training meetings on Fridays from 9:30am - 11:30am or 1:30pm - 3:30pm for the first semester of employment and designated meetings on Thursdays from 4:30-5:45 pm.

• Must be available to attend peer educator training in January (Dates TBD). Note that all HR paperwork must be completed prior to starting training.
• Must attend weekly staff meetings on Fridays from 10am - 11am
