WHY does BSD offer PreK programming?

Brunswick School Department believes that providing children with a Pre-Kindergarten experience facilitates their success by nurturing their academic, social and emotional development. Our PreK for ME curriculum is intended to actively engage students in their learning, and to provide them with regular opportunities for hands-on activities and outdoor experiences. We strive to support the development of students who love learning and are resilient, empathetic, engaged members of the community. Brunswick also believes that offering public Pre-Kindergarten increases the opportunities for all students and families to equitably access high-quality, early childhood programming.

WHO is eligible for BSD PreK programming?

All children residing in Brunswick, who are 4 years old on or before 10/15/2024, are eligible.

(Children who are already 5 years old on or before 10/15/24 are eligible to register for Kindergarten only.)

WHAT kind of PreK programming will BSD offer?

All BSD PreK programs will be for full school days, Monday-Friday and are free of cost to all families.

WHERE will BSD offer PreK programming?

Maine Department of Education strongly encourages school districts to work with community partners to provide high quality early childhood education opportunities for more students. In addition to a program at Kate Furbish Elementary School, BSD will be partnering with Family Focus, Midcoast Maine Community Action (MMCA) and Child Development Services (CDS). Family Focus is nationally accredited through the National Association of the Education for Young Children (NAEYC) and MMCA is accredited through Head Start. Both programs are a Step 4 on the Maine Early Childhood Rating Scale.

HOW will BSD determine which PreK program my child attends?

BSD will strive to create balanced classes within all of the programs. There will be a determined number of spaces allocated for students with individualized educational plans, multilingual learners, and families who qualify socio-economically. The remaining spaces will be determined through a lottery system.

HOW do I sign my child up for BSD PreK Programming?

1- Fill out this application.

2- Bring your child to the Screening Appointment on March 15th.

3- Placement emails will be sent to families on April 1.

4- Complete online registration between April 1 and 11, to confirm your spot.
