Possible Boating Speed Limit Change for Back Bay Areas – Canals and Inlets (Fenwick Ditch

What is being considered?

The Department is considering two requests to change the current 6-knot speed limit all year.  The First Requestor requested making the area a no-wake zone. The Second Requestor requested making the area a minimum wake zone.

 Why is this change necessary?

The First Requestor noted a need for a no-wake zone due to Irresponsible boaters ruining piers, bulkheads, and shorelines. The First Requestor also noted that the current speed was designed from 80's when few boaters existed and that Delaware Jet Ski Rentals that should use Delaware waters.

The Second Requestor noted a minimum wake zone is needed to avoid further destruction of the habitat. There has been a constant increase in population in addition to climate change is having a negative impact on marshes. Additionally, the Second Requestor noted that in their opinion a minimum wake (with proper enforcement) can have a significant effect on the future of the marshes and environment.
