SPRING Academy Masterclass 2017
Masterclass From Teresina to Tohoku: The Reinvention of a (dancing) Body by Marcelo Evelin
22 – 23 May 2017

The masterclass consists of a two-day workshop. It is based on Evelin’s latest creation Danca Doente (Sick Dance) and the material developed during its research period, as well as the approaches, practices and procedures discovered in its creation process. The masterclass focuses on how to create something from a research, not as a reconstruction or a representation of it, but in a ghostly matter, letting it appear as a spectrum that insistently haunts and defines the creation.

From Teresina to Tohoku: The Reinvention of a (dancing) Body
Danca Doente is the latest piece by Marcelo Evelin/Demolition Incorporada, presented at Spring Performing Arts Festival 2017. Dance Doente takes as departure point the universe of Japanese choreographer Hijikata Tatsumi (1928-1986), the creator of Butoh, the dance of darkness. Hijikata’s work dwells with death and sickness, subversion and instability, and eroticism and criminality. He approached dance as a reinvention of the body, not only as form but as political positioning in the world, which has played an important role for the creation of Danca Doente.

Encounters of participants with Evelin will happen on a level of sharing rather than teaching, developing further questions and common interests rather than obtaining conclusions, and will combine conceptual dialogue and exchange of ideas with physical practice and investigation on performativity.

Marcelo Evelin is a choreographer, researcher and performer, living and working between Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and his birthplace Teresina in Brazil. In Europe, since 1986, he works with dance and collaborates with artists from different domains such as physical theater, music, video, installation and site-specific art. He is guest teacher at the Mime Department of the Amsterdam University of the Arts where he also guides students in their creative processes. In addition, he coordinates workshops and collaborative projects in various countries in Europe, America, Africa, Japan, South America and Brazil. In 1995, Evelin established his Company Demolition Incorporada and coordinated the Nucleo Do Dirceu, a platform for research on performance art between 2006-2013. In 2016 he opened his own studio and residency place at CAMPO in Teresina, Brazil. His performance "Suddenly everywhere is black with people” (2012) is currently touring in theaters and festivals in Brazil and abroad. In 2014 he created “Batucada”, a performance for 50 people, commissioned by Kunsten Festival des Arts and recreated in other festivals in Brazil and Europe.

The fee of the masterclass workshop is €85,-.
This price includes two full days of workshop, lunch (for both days). Accommodation and travel are not included in the workshop fee.
