In order to maximize student achievement, students in need of assistance may be reassigned to an academic intervention class in lieu of one elective choice. As always, electives are subject to change or cancellation. Budget constraints may further affect RRISD schedules and class availability.
Performance Art Courses Available to 7th Graders
Performance Art courses require the purchase of a shirt and attendance at rehearsals and performances. Performances count as summative assessments.
0625 Band – Beginning (First year). Students will develop basic musical literacy skills while learning to play their respective wind or percussion instruments in preparation for a sequential experience in a full band setting in subsequent years. The students will be screened for placement on an instrument based upon their physical characteristics, as well as their preference, with the goal of placing them on instruments with which they can be successful. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0736 Band – Advanced band placement is determined by the directors through audition. Students further develop ear training, individual and ensemble playing skills, tone production, and music reading in a full band setting. Students attend sectional technique classes, and participate in numerous concerts, contests, and community performances. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0667 Orchestra - Beginning (First year). Students develop basic playing skills, practice habits, music reading, and listening skills, while playing violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp. Harp students in RRISD are required to take private harp lessons. Students will be screened for placement on an appropriate instrument. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0802 Orchestra - Advanced orchestra placement is determined by the director through audition. Students extend their ear training skills, playing skills, tone production, music reading, and musicianship. Students participate in a variety of concerts, festivals, and community events. There may be a rental fee associated with a school owned instrument.
0646 Choir - Beginning (First year). Students will develop choral reading techniques, ear training, vocal production, solfege, and basic music theory skills in preparation for a sequential experience in a choir setting in subsequent years. Students will also develop skills in musicianship, ear training/listening skills, individual/ensemble singing, vocal production, music reading, and performance skills.
0750 Girls Choir - Placement is determined by director through audition. Students will develop skills in musicianship, ear training/listening skills. Individual ensemble singing, vocal production, music reading, performance skills, and music theory. Advanced choir students will study a variety of vocal styles and literature as they further develop and refine individual performance skills. In 7th/8th grades, students may also participate in UIL Choir contests and numerous community programs, and are encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble competitions and All-Region Choir Auditions.
0751 Boys' Choir - Students will develop skills in musicianship, ear training/listening skills. Individual ensemble singing, vocal production, music reading and performance skills. Advanced choir students will study a variety of vocal styles and literature as they further develop and refine individual performance skills. Visual Art Courses Available to 7th Graders
0680 Dance Fine Arts - Teacher determines placement. Students will learn basic elements of dance styles and acquire the wellness information and skills necessary to become healthy adults. All Dance class students will be required to purchase a T-shirt.
0848 Theatre Arts - Beginning (First year). First year students explore elements of drama and conventions of theatre; interpret characters, voice and body expression and the relationship of theatre to history, society, and culture. This work may culminate in a production performed for the public.
0849 Theatre Arts Advanced - Placement is determined by directors through audition. Students learn basic acting skills, pantomime, improvisation, storytelling, character analysis, body expression and the relationship of theatre to history, society, and culture. Advanced students interpret characters using the voice and body to interpret scenes and study the relationship of theatre to history, society, and culture. This work may culminate in a production performed for the public.
Ridgeview is considering the option of a Vocal Ensemble (Musical Theater) class for 7th and 8th graders dependent on space and allocations.
In this course students will study a variety of vocal styles and literature as they further develop and refine individual and group performance skills. One year of choir or theater is required as a prerequisite.

0673 Discovery (Technical Theatre) – Technical Theatre consists of set and prop construction, theatre safety, lighting and sound design, board operation, costume and makeup design, and stage management. This class will assist with the needs for all RMS Theatre Department shows. Technical Theatre involves physical movement, lifting heavy objects, working with power tools, lumber, paint, furniture and set pieces. Student placement is determined by the directors after the student applies and interviews with Ms. Taylor.
0842 Middle School Art 1- A $25 fee is required for supplies. Students will develop the basic elements and principles of design, art history, and art appreciation. Students design, develop, and create art using a variety of media.
0845 Middle School Art 2A- A $25 fee is required for supplies. This course extends the learning of the elements of art and principles of design, art history, and art appreciation. Students design, develop, and create art using a variety of media.

This course extends the learning of the elements of art and principles of design, art history, and art appreciation. Students design, develop, and create art using a variety of media and then applying in the digital world. A $25 fee would be required for supplies.

CTE/Elective Courses Available to Seventh Graders
*High school credit is awarded upon successful completion
0827 Gateway to Technology * A $15.00 fee may be charged to cover supply expenses. This hands-on class integrates math, science, and technology to show how engineering is used to solve everyday problems. Students develop skills that will prepare them for a rigorous high school curriculum. This course does not contribute towards an endorsement. One high school elective credit will be awarded after successful completion.
0671A TV/Video Production - Parents must sign a consent for their students to be photographed and for projects to be published on YouTube with a private URL address. This class includes an introduction to video editing and news broadcasting strategies in the middle school environment.
0671B TV/Video Broadcast (PROWL) - Parents must sign a consent for their students to be photographed and for projects to be published on YouTube with a private URL address. This class includes advanced video editing and news broadcasting strategies in the middle school environment.
0661 Tech Apps 2A- Students will be introduced to a variety of software for animation and web design (including Adobe products) in order to advance their skills to create and produce higher quality products and projects. Tech Apps 1 is not a prerequisite.
0794 Journalism: Yearbook - This course teaches students yearbook design and composition in order to compose the school yearbook. Students are instructed in digital photography skills, interviewing, and writing skills. The student must complete an application for approval.
0894 Study Skills- This course is designed to provide instruction in techniques for developing better study habits. Students will learn techniques that will improve their time management, along with organizational, listening, test-taking, and note-taking skills. Time will also be spent working on homework.
0892 Leadership: This course is based on the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Students will increase leadership skills through the planning process, problem solving, and becoming effective speakers. It is our hope that students taking this course will become change agents on campus.
LOTE Courses Available to Seventh Graders
**High school credit is awarded upon successful completion of second year in course.
0775 Spanish 1A** (First year) This course introduces the language and facilitates opportunities for students to acquire basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary acquisition and communication in daily situations are emphasized. Students will also compare cultures and customs. In order to receive credit, a student must successfully complete both Spanish 1A and 1B.
0776 Spanish 1B** (Second year of the Spanish 1 credit) prerequisite: Evidence of successful completion of Spanish 1A.
0771 French 1A** (First year) This course introduces the language and facilitates opportunities for students to acquire basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary acquisition and communication in daily situations are emphasized. Students will also compare cultures and customs. In order to receive credit, a student must successfully complete both French 1A and 1B.
0772 French 1B** (Second year of the French 1 credit) prerequisite: Evidence of successful completion of French 1A.
0757 Discovering Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture. This course is designed for students who were enrolled in the Duel Language class as 6th graders. Students will experience the acquisition of Spanish in a formal LOTE classroom. They will explore the study of Spanish grammar structures and academic vocabulary. Note - there is no high school credit for this course.

By clicking below, we commit that these are the courses we request to be scheduled for the 2018-2019 academic year. We understand that school resources will be allocated based on these choices. Student schedules will not be changed to select different teachers or to drop a previously selected elective. Change of mind requests will not be honored after the course verification window in May. *
