Preliminary Information
1. Middle School percussion is often misunderstood to be the study of drums/drumset when it is in fact the study of mallets and snare drum/practice pad.  If your child's desire is to play drum set, the study of percussion can frustrate them.

2. If your child is not determined or does not have a strong desire to be in the percussion section please refrain from auditioning.

3. It is important that only students with a desire to continue playing in band in 8th grade audition for percussion as students that are selected for percussion and quit band early take percussion spots away from students that would continue in band.

We understand that percussion is the study of mallets and practice pad not drum set. *
Required
We understand that since percussionists study two instruments (mallets and pad), practice time will be double that of other instruments (40 minutes/five days a week instead of 20 minutes/five days per week). *
We understand that successful percussionists are academically strong (grades and consistent homework completion), organized, and do not struggle with behavior (reminder that percussionsts will spend the majority of their time at the back of the room far from me). *
We understand that if not selected for percussion I will play one of my wind instrument choices. *
We understand it is important that only students with a desire to continue playing in band in 8th grade and high school should audition for percussion as students that are selected for percussion and quit band early take percussion spots away from students that would continue in band. *
Percussion Tryouts
Percussion tryouts will occur after your wind instrument tryouts on February 19th (be sure to register for your wind instrument tryouts on the other Google Form!). You will tryout after checking out with Mr. Perez and selecting a regular band instruments and then you will tryout with our percussion instructor. He will have you perform coordination and rhythm exercises to see your coordination and timing.  In addition, you will show your understanding of notes in the treble clef as well as piano keyboard note names from the study materials. This process generally adds approximately 30 minutes to your overall instrument tryout experience.
Study Materials
Study materials for the treble clef and piano keyboard are below. You will be tested on this information at your tryout. Here is the link to the percussion study materials: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-DtM_9-pcxPPx_ksAus4MPP8NlUrWu5d/view?usp=sharing
