Join the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and CalTrout on Saturday, November 15th from 9am-12pm for a Baduwa't Estuary volunteer day!
The Baduwa't Estuary restoration project, a partnership between CalTrout and the McKinleyville Community Services District (MCSD), transformed former wastewater percolation ponds into vital off-channel salmonid rearing habitat. This 9.3-acre project, located at the Baduwa't estuary, created a backwater channel, ponds, and wetlands with log structures and native plantings to provide shelter from high flows and food sources for juvenile coho salmon, steelhead, and other fish species. The site is now named Lhiwetgut, a Soulatluk word for this place chosen by the Wiyot Tribe. Lhiwetgut is part of the Wiyot Tribe’s aboriginal territory and is now a habitat restored for the community to enjoy, learn about the land, and connect with the natural world. The restoration and public access project was completed by CalTrout and partners in November 2022 and has quickly become a destination for the community to gather and connect with the natural world. Lhiwetgut includes a short ADA-accessible loop with two coastal overlooks, multiple benches, and a picnic table. Three ADA parking spaces can accommodate visitors who arrive by vehicle because the site is easy to access by walking and biking.
