Squares + Streets: Open letter in support of pro-housing & transportation proposals for Roslindale Square

This letter was written by Roslindale residents in support of several pro-housing and pro-transit recommendations for Roslindale Square, many of which were recently proposed by the Planning Department.

----------

We believe our transit-accessible, intergenerational, and economically diverse neighborhood is a great place to live, and we want to welcome more neighbors to have the opportunity to live here. We therefore support the following recommendations to ensure that Roslindale remains a thriving community in the years to come:

  1. Approve housing development on the Taft Hill municipal parking lot (details)

  2. Allow maximum zoning flexibility with S3, S2, and even S5 (where appropriate) districts on commercial corridors, main streets, gateways and community connections (details)

  3. Legalize incremental housing development with S0 zoning on Roslindale Square’s residential streets (details)

  4. Restore two-way Washington St and convert Poplar St to shared street (details)

  5. Reduce financial barriers to Commuter Rail access with lower fares (details)
As concerned residents of Roslindale, we recognize that our neighborhood is part of the broader Boston community that faces a massive housing shortage. The result of too few homes is incredibly high housing prices, and that risks greater displacement of our most vulnerable neighbors. We want to do our part to ensure that Roslindale and the city of Boston broadly meet the needs of a growing population.
