Doing Ethnography: Notes from the Field Spring Workshop

We invite UCL PhD students who have completed or are currently completing ethnographic fieldwork to sign up for our half-day workshop “Notes from the Field: Interdisciplinary Reflections on Ethnographic Research,” taking place in person on May 15th, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the IAS Common Ground. Coffee and lunch will be provided. Please note this workshop is not open to non-UCL students.

This workshop offers a supportive space for a small group of PhD researchers to reflect on their ethnographic methods and field-notes, and to explore how these can be creatively and rigorously integrated into dissertation writing. It builds on the success of the 2024 “Writing Ethnography” conference and continues the conversation around multimodal and reflexive approaches to research.

The session will include:

  • A keynote masterclass by Dr. Tatiana Thieme, addressing ethnographic methods, writing ethnography, and her new book: Hustle Urbanism: Making Life Work in Nairobi

  • A Photo/Video-Voice workshop exploring visual and participatory approaches to deepen ethnographic analysis.

  • A Collaborative Forum where participants will pre-circulate creative fieldwork reflections (such as images, drawings, journal entries, sound clips, etc.) and engage in peer discussion.

We welcome PhD students from across disciplines who are interested in experimenting with methodological tools, reflecting critically on their research experiences, and building interdisciplinary networks.

Please register your interest by May 7th, 2025. Space is limited to 15 participants to ensure an intimate and interactive environment.
