2020 NST Student Coordinator/Assistant Leader Application Form
Greetings!

You are receiving this form because you have either been a part of College Outdoors as a Student Coordinator or Assistant Leader, or you have indicated an interest in a leadership position.  We are currently planning for New Student Trips happening in August of 2020.  If you are interested in applying to help lead College Outdoors New Student Trips, please read on!

Please read the points below very carefully!  These note the things we're looking for in Assistant Leader & Student Coordinator candidates. There are many people who apply for these positions and limited openings.  Consequently, we cannot always offer each applicant a position, though we try our best! There's no cost to you to go on the trip. Student Coordinators and Assistant Leaders assist the Trip Leaders, and in return, go on the trip for free.  We will also have warehouse and logistics positions available both throughout the summer and during NSTs.  Even if you aren't selected as a coordinator or assistant leader, we may consider you for one of these positions.

Please submit this application by Sunday, February 2nd for first consideration.

1. First aid training is good to have, especially WFR, if possible

2. Good map and compass skills (and GPS/Gaia skills) are a plus, especially if you want to coordinate any trip involving backpacking or day hiking.

3. Being cleared to drive for the College is a plus.  Trailer backing experience is a plus. A clean driving record (if you're not yet cleared to drive vehicles for the College) is a plus. Experience driving large vehicles is a plus. Priority staffing will be given to people who are trailer cleared with College Outdoors, especially for trips that use a trailer.

4. Good group dynamics and facilitation skills are very important. The success of each trip rides on the cohesiveness of the group and your ability to play a role in fostering a sense of community.

5. We are looking for energetic, upbeat, skilled people!

6. If this is your first time coordinating a New Student Trip:  You must be here for NST staff training beginning on Saturday, August 15th.  To be here for training on Saturday morning, you'll want to arrive in Portland by Friday night, August 14th.  In April, there will be two additional required trainings to prepare you for NSTs. These will be held on Wednesday evenings (exact dates TBD); make-up options will be available for those with class or other unavoidable conflicts.

If you’re chosen as a coordinator or assistant leader, you go on the trip for FREE but will be asked to write a deposit check for $150. The check is your commitment to show up for staff training and do a good job on the trip.  You'd only lose the deposit if you flake out of the trip (medical or family emergency situations excluded), or if you get in trouble with Campus Living.

The check is also a damage deposit for staying in the residence halls before and after your trip. Campus Living has allowed us to stay in the halls for FREE during staff training and before classes start, but they DEFINITELY don't want the student coordinators to be partying, making lots of noise, or otherwise being poor role models for the impressionable new students. If you get in trouble with Campus Living, you're likely to lose your deposit check.  (You wouldn't do that anyway, would you? Of course, we know you wouldn't!)
