What to Expect

Millennium Recycling is a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). During your tour, you'll see how single-stream recyclables are received, sorted, separated, and prepared for shipment to downstream recycling partners.

Please note: Millennium Recycling does not grind, wash, melt, shred, or manufacture new recycled products at our facility. If you're expecting to see new bottles, cans, or other products being made, that process takes place at specialized manufacturing facilities—not at Millennium Recycling.

A recycling facility contains materials and equipment commonly found in an active industrial environment. During your visit, you may encounter:
  • Broken glass
  • Sharp metal objects, knives, and other sharp materials
  • Medical waste, including sharps
  • Food waste, diapers, dirt, grease, mud, and dust
  • Magazines or printed materials containing adult content (occasionally visible in bales or on the sorting line)
  • Heavy equipment, including conveyors, balers, electro-magnets, forklifts, and other industrial machinery
Millennium Recycling follows established safety procedures, provides employee safety training, and schedules tours during less active operating times whenever possible. However, these hazards cannot be completely eliminated.

Health Considerations
Individuals with respiratory sensitivities, mobility limitations, or concerns regarding dust, odors, loud noises, or industrial environments should carefully consider whether a facility tour is appropriate or choose one of the alternative learning opportunities listed below.

Tour Requirements  *
Millennium Recycling has established the following guidelines for the safety of all tour participants. Exceptions to these guidelines are at the discretion of Millennium Recycling.

Dress Code
  • Long pants are required.
  • Footwear must be sturdy and fully enclosed with closed toes and closed heels.
  • Shoes must completely cover the top of the foot.
  • Shoes must have a solid, slip-resistant sole.
  • Heels may not exceed 1½ inches high and must be at least 1 inch wide.
  • Sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, open-backed shoes, and other non-compliant footwear are not permitted.
Participants who do not meet the required dress code will not be permitted to participate in the tour.

Age & Group Requirements
  • Participants should generally be 11 years of age or older. 
  • Children under 6 years old, including infants, are not permitted.
  • Groups with minors must maintain a minimum ratio of 1 adult for every 5 minors.
  • Tour groups are generally limited to 20 participants.
Tour Rules
  • Every participant must complete and sign this "Millennium Recycling Tour Guidelines & Waiver"  before participating.
  • Participants must remain with the tour guide at all times.
  • Participants must stay within designated tour areas.
  • Participants may not touch equipment, barriers, or materials unless instructed by Millennium staff.
Required
Scheduling, Parking & Arrival   *
  • Tours are generally scheduled on Fridays between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when processing equipment is not operating  (some exceptions may apply).
  • Parking is limited. Carpooling is encouraged whenever possible.
  • Truck traffic is frequent throughout the property. Please drive slowly and use caution while entering, exiting, and walking around the facility.
  • Due to the nature of a recycling facility, loose recyclable materials may occasionally be present in the parking lot, particularly during windy conditions. Millennium performs routine cleanup throughout the week, but some windblown materials may still be present.
  • The office entrance is located on the south side of the building.

Alternatives or Additions to a Tour
If a facility tour isn't the best fit for your group, Millennium Recycling also offers:

Release of Liability & Assumption of Risk

In consideration of being permitted to participate in a tour of Millennium Recycling, Inc. ("MRI"), the undersigned releases, waives, discharges, and covenants not to sue MRI, its agents, managers, directors, officers, and employees (collectively, the "Releasees") from any and all liability to the undersigned and the undersigned's parents or legal guardians for any loss, damage, injury, or death arising out of participation in the facility tour, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, due to the undersigned being in or upon the MRI premises.

The undersigned further acknowledges and understands that MRI is an active industrial recycling facility containing moving equipment, conveyors, forklifts, balers, glass, metal, sharp objects, dust, uneven walking surfaces, and other hazards that may result in injury or damage to personal property. The undersigned understands these risks, appreciates their nature, and knowingly and voluntarily assumes all risks associated with participating in the facility tour.

The undersigned agrees to remain with the tour guide at all times, stay within designated tour areas, follow all safety instructions provided by Millennium staff, and not touch equipment, barriers, or materials unless instructed to do so.

The undersigned agrees to indemnify and hold the Releasees harmless from any loss, liability, damage, or cost, including reasonable attorney's fees, they may incur due to the presence of the undersigned in or upon the MRI premises, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise.

The undersigned understands that photographs and video may be taken during the tour and may be used by Millennium Recycling, Inc. for educational, promotional, or other lawful purposes. Individuals who do not wish to appear in photographs or video should notify Millennium staff prior to the start of the tour.

The undersigned further agrees that this Release of Liability and Indemnification Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of South Dakota. If any portion is determined to be invalid, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

Millennium Recycling reserves the right to remove any participant who fails to follow safety instructions or whose behavior creates a safety risk for themselves or others.

The undersigned assumes full responsibility for all risks of injury or property damage while participating in the facility tour and agrees to comply with Millennium Recycling's dress code, including wearing long pants and fully enclosed footwear with closed toes, closed heels, and solid slip-resistant soles. Participants who do not meet these requirements will not be permitted to participate in the tour.
