Statement of Intent
Research involving animals is essential to advancing fundamental understanding about living systems and to the development of therapeutics and treatments that will cure diseases, relieve suffering and improve overall quality of life for humans and animals. We are committed to the humane care of the animals and the ethical imperative to use the most appropriate model to answer scientific questions. Regulatory oversight is designed to verify institutional approval of animal activities and to maximize the welfare of these animals.

Expanded openness about why, when and how animals are required to further scientific knowledge is needed to help facilitate meaningful conversations about animal research at all levels of society.  As a result, we commit to joining with the United States Animal Research Openness (USARO) Initiative to develop a U.S. Animal Research Openness Agreement. 

Details for endorsing the USARO Statement of Intent
  • Your institution agrees to join with the USARO Initiative to develop a U.S. Animal Research Openness Agreement.  
  • Your institution will be provided with a USARO Initiative Partner Logo that can be included on your website or other materials if desired.
  • A contact person from your institution will be added to the list of internal reviewers to help to inform the development of an USARO Agreement.
  • Your institution/contact person will join the USARO community to share, learn and discuss topics related to increased openness about animal research.
