Expression of Interest for 2024 Section Level Tech Panel Synchro Seminar

Skate Canada will be hosting a Synchronized Skating Technical Panel Training Seminar in a hybrid format this year including:

  1. Virtual: three sessions held in January on a Tuesday or Wednesday (each 2 hours in length)
  2. In-person: February 9-11, 2024 in conjunction with Skate Ontario Synchro Series #3 in Oakville, ON
The in-person portion will require and include the following:

  • Arrival Feb 8th (anytime)
  • Feb 9-10 classroom and practical application
  • Feb 11 exams (departure by 3pm)

Examination: Examination is comprised of two phases:

  • Phase I:
    • Written examination comprised of assessment of technical knowledge and element identification
    • Video exam, simulating actual panel process
  • Phase II:
    • Mentorship and practical examination on panel at Section Level Invitational events 

Following candidates successful completion of the seminar and requisite on-panel assessments, they will be required to complete STAR 1-4 Event Assessor Clinic (full clinic) if they have not already done so.

In order to identify potential candidates, please complete the survey (deadline: October 11, 2023) below.

As we have limited spaces available in this course, the Skate Ontario Synchronized Skating Officials Working Group will consider all applications for this clinic, and will select candidates based on:

  • Personal synchronized skating background and experience
  • Interest in becoming an official
  • Geographic location 
  • Other competencies and skills 

Candidates will be advised on the status of their application in the weeks following the deadline (exact timing is TBD).

Technical official training prerequisites and requirements

The prerequisites to obtaining a section/region technical controller and/or specialist appointment are

1. Skating Background:

  • Any two of Junior Bronze or STAR 5 Free Skating, Skills, Dance tests; or
  • Any one of Senior Bronze Free Skating, Skills, Dance or a Juvenile Competitive test; or
  • Any one higher level test.

2. Successful completion of Skate Canada's Code of Ethics Officials online training

3. Successful completion of the Respect in Sport Activity Leader online training

Qualification Prerequisite:  must be 16 years of age.

Technical Specialist-specific training requirements:

  • Skating background, as defined above
  • It is recommended but not required that candidates should have experience as either a skater, coach, judge, referee or technical controller at the section/region level.
Technical Controller-specific training prerequisites:

  • It is recommended but not required that candidates should have Section/Region level referee qualifications in the discipline associated with initial appointment to Sectional/Regional Technical Controller.
  • Technical specialists can apply for training as a controller in the discipline in which they are already qualified as a specialist.
