No Till Drill Equipment Rental Agreement
***NOTICE: the drill is not currently available, but will return to being available for use starting in September, 2024***

This Equipment Rental Agreement is required to be completed prior to borrowing the Marin Resource Conservation District's Great Plains No Till Drill 606-NT-0975, 6-foot pull-type seeding implement, Manufacturer's Serial Number GP-VV2538 (hereinafter referred to as the "Drill"). By completing this form and submitting it, Lessee acknowledges receipt of a completed Equipment Loan Agreement, has read all rules and instructions, and agrees to all of the terms and conditions of such Equipment Loan Agreement.

Specs and information about the drill may be found here.

The Drill rental rate is $200.00 per day for properties within the boundary of the Marin Resource Conservation District (MRCD; hereinafter referred to as "Lessor") and $250.00 per day for properties outside of the MRCD boundary. The Drill may not travel greater than 15 miles outside of the MRCD boundary and there is a one day minimum use requirement (minimum $200.00 fee).

Link to MRCD District map may be found here.

The Lessee agrees to a late return charge of $450.00 per day, in addition to the daily rental fee, paid to the Lessor for each day the Drill is not returned after the agreed upon date within the completed Equipment Loan Agreement. If unforeseen and/or unavoidable circumstances (such as weather or equipment malfunction) delay the return of the Drill, the Lessee will immediately notify the Lessor prior to the return deadline.

The Lessee may cancel their rental agreement with the Lessor with more than 24 hours (1 day) notice. If the Lessee cancels their rental agreement with more than 24 hours notice, the Lessee will incur no charges. However, if the Lessee cancels their rental agreement with less than 24 hours notice, a charge of $150.00 will be incurred and removed from the deposit before being returned to the Lessee.

The Lessee agrees to make a $500.00 deposit as a security/cleaning deposit to be used to defray fully or partially the cost of necessary repairs or replacement in the event of loss or damage to the Drill during the term of this agreement. In the absence of loss or damage, this deposit shall be credited toward payment of the rental fee and any excess shall be returned to the Lessee.

Great Plains 606NT
Great Plains 606NT Tractor & Hauling Requirements:

Please note that use of the Drill is strictly limited to Marin County and parts of Sonoma County within 15 miles bordering the MRCD district. If you are inquiring from a surrounding county, we encourage you to contact your local RCD and express your interest in using a no-till drill (or any other shared-use equipment). If they receive interest and feedback about the need for equipment such as this in your community, then they may be able to pursue grant funding opportunities to purchase such equipment.

The Great Plains No Till Drill 606-NT is a pull-type (it has wheels on the end of the Drill), which can be towed directly behind a truck for transport (no trailer is necessary). We have a clevis hitch for securing the Drill during transport. You need a ¾ ton pick-up truck, as the Drill weighs 2,700 lbs.  It has no suspension, so it needs to be transported slowly otherwise it will be damaged. This is hopefully obvious, but the Drill cannot be transported on major highways or freeways! The manufacturer's instructions caution that the max speed when moving the Drill from site to site is 20 mph. You must follow these instructions when transporting the Drill. The Drill itself is about 9 feet wide – maybe even a little wider. Towing at high speeds or with a vehicle that is not heavy enough could lead to loss of vehicle control, serious road accidents, injury, or death. Proper adherence to these instructions will help ensure safe transport of the Drill, without injury persons or damage to the equipment. It is street legal and it has the necessary orange signs for agricultural equipment and hook-ups for lights during towing (see photo above).

Use of the Drill requires a 40+ hp tractor with hydraulic hook-ups. The Drill has a planting coverage of about 7 feet. A good rule of thumb is that you can cover about 2 acres per hour (flat ground). The Drill is most appropriate for rangeland and pasture settings, as well as cover crop seeding for vegetable and flower farms (if gates are wide enough for entry). It is too wide for vineyard rows and likely too tall for orchards, depending on tree age/height (contact MRCD before use in orchards).

Each year we expect more inquiries to use the Drill then we are able to accommodate, so it is likely that we will not be able to serve every person who inquires. Please sign-up well in advance of expected use to help ensure your access. It is extremely important that you treat the Drill like you own it, so that others can benefit from this program into the future. We aim to offer this opportunity to as many people as possible, for as long as possible. Responsible use of the Drill is essential to maintaining its longevity and helping us to build out our shared tool library with other implements. As such, please report to MRCD staff (lee@marinrcd.org) immediately if something breaks.

Please read the operators manual and watch the following videos (linked below) before leasing the Drill, even if you've used a no-till drill previously. The total watch time of both videos is less than 20 minutes - please don't skip this step!

Here is a video (11:30 minutes) from Utah State University Extension talking about how to set up a drill if you are renting one from a conservation district. They are using a Great Plains 1206 NTD, but the same considerations apply to the MRCD no-till drill (Great Plains 606 NTD).
Here is a video (6:45 minutes) with Great Plains Agronomist, Blake Bergkamp, and Product Manager, Sterling Stepp, where they take a look at the 1006NT compact drill. They discuss some of the key features and options that make this drill a great solution for pasture and native grass seeding, crop production, and more.
Please check here if you have used the Drill before. *
