Are all of the rotation matrices the same?
Yes, performing any axis-angle rotation (along x,y, and z) uses the same transformation matrix.
No, rotating about the x-axis is different than y or z.
Is it possible to perform translation with a 2x2 matrix?
No, you need an additional dimension. This is known as an affine transformation which in effect stores where a point moves.
Yes, you can just like with rotation and scale.
Does the last '1' mean anything in a translation matrix
No, we just set it to 1 so the math works out.
Yes, it tells us if we are translating a point or a vector. Additionally, it is used in perspective transformations.
