Reel Voices 2020 Application
Program Description
Reel Voices empowers high school youth, one film at a time–tackling topics like self love, social issues, intergenerational trauma and cultural identity, in stories that are both personal and deeply relevant to the broader San Diego community. Every Summer Reel Voices works with 12 high school students in the community to teach them FREE documentary filmmaking classes. We believe that film has the power to build a more compassionate society, and through our education program, we hope to provide students with the tools to creatively build a dialogue around topics that are relevant to who they are, where they live and their experience growing up as a teenager in Southern California.

Who Can Apply
No experience necessary. Any high school student that meets the grade level requirements and is interested in producing their own documentary film can apply. To qualify, you must be a student enrolled in high school during the Fall 2020 to Spring 2021 school year. That means next Fall you will be a Freshman, currently 8th grade, through incoming Seniors, currently 11th grade. Before you apply, we also encourage students to consider their Summer schedule (class information below) and that in the case their schedules are not compatible, to consider applying a different year. No absences are allowed during the program.

About the Class
The class runs on Tuesdays and Thursday (June 16 to Aug 6) from 10AM to 3PM at our offices in Liberty Station, San Diego. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the site. The workload is approximately 15-20 hours a week, 10 hours in class and 5-10 hours outside of class, for 8 weeks. Students have up to 20 hours after the program to finish editing the final cut of their project. Camera equipment, computers and software is provided, but students are welcome to use their own equipment. All films will debut at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in November, students are invited to attend the gala where they are recognized by the public for their project and receive a $500 scholarship.
