Happy Valley BSU: Registration
Thank you for your interest in the Elementary Black Student Union (BSU)!

The BSU is an after-school club that meets weekly at Happy Valley Elementary. The club is intended to be a joyful space for students to connect and engage in fun activities that center Black joy and excellence. Snacks will be provided!

When: Wednesdays, 2:30 - 4:00pm. First meeting was November 6, 2024 - but the group is always open to new members.

Where: Happy Valley Elementary, 1041 24th St, Bellingham, WA 98225

Why: Racial identity development is “the process of defining for oneself the personal significance and social meaning of belonging to a particular racial group.” Children internalize aspects of racial identity from the adults and peers around them. For students of color in predominantly white schools, resisting negative stereotypes and affirming carefully considered definitions of themselves are critical to counterbalance the limited number of role models who mirror them racially. (from Identity, Affinity, Reality) Affinity groups are spaces that allow people who share an identity to gather, talk, and engage in joyful and identity-affirming activities with others who share similar lived experiences.
