What to expect

► Fill out this form, and we'll follow up and send you our volunteer intake form.

► After you complete the volunteer intake form, we'll run your background check. Normally a longer process, due to the current situation all background checks are expedited and should take less than a few days.

► Once your background check clears, we'll either connect you with one of our case managers if there's a senior available for matching, or put you on our waitlist until one is.

► The case manager we connect you with will coordinate between you and your senior match. Every week, you'll make calls to your senior, and report back periodically to the case manager with updates on your senior's health and well being.

Key responsibilities

► Provide companionship to a lonely senior or disabled adult by telephone.

► Make a commitment of 6 months, to foster relationship building.

► Call your client match twice per week (frequency needs may vary from person to person). Clients referred for this service are in need of socialization, so a commitment to regular phone calls is important.

► Remotely participate in activities and hobbies, assist with organizing/reading bills and mail, or just spend time with the client, per client’s and volunteer’s preferences.

► Be an extra set of ears for our program when calling a client so that if something changes with the client’s habits (e.g. normally upbeat and suddenly seems despondent) you can alert the program advocate for follow up.

► Comply with YWCA rules meant to help maintain healthy boundaries.

► Report your time spent visiting monthly to the YWCA through the program advocate.
Qualifications

► Pass a state background check.

► Clear communication skills.

► Experience with seniors or adults with disabilities.

► Enjoy working with seniors.

► Sensitive/open to people from diverse lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures.

► Work as part of a team.

► Remotely attend required trainings.

► Make regular short reports to the program advocate.
