Letter from Mr. Stuckey - Math 1

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year, I am looking forward to the learning that is going to take place this year and I hope that you are, too. Contained in this letter is some very important information, so please hold onto it so that you can reference it in the future.

This course develops the ability to discern, conjecture, reason, invent, and construct mathematically. It includes functions, transformations, congruence, exponential functions, linear inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, coordinate geometry, and statistics. Students use algebra and a full range of problem-solving skills in the development of algebra and geometric concepts.

Grades are posted electronically online. Students and parents can access them through the Parent Portal (https://abip.fsusd.org/ParentPortal/).

Grade Meanings

A The student has completed proficient work on all course objectives and advanced work on some objectives.

B The student has completed proficient work on all course objectives.

C The student has completed proficient work on the most important objectives, although not on all objectives. The students can continue to the next course.

D The student has completed proficient work on at least one-half of the course objectives but is missing some important objectives and is at significant risk of failing the next course in the sequence. The student should repeat the course if it is a prerequisite for another course.

F The student has completed proficient work on fewer than one-half of the course objectives and cannot successfully complete the next course in sequence.

Students will need their own calculator. The calculator must have trigonometric functions of it: sin, cos, and tan. Graphing calculators are nice, but not necessary. Many scientific calculators for iPhone or Android phones are inexpensive and good enough for this class. However, phones will not be allowed on tests. The calculator I will be teaching from in class is the TI-36X Pro (http://goo.gl/EtmthM). It is available for about $20.

Computer-based assignment with be assigned on Google Classroom and Khan Academy. I have tried to use the most accessible software available so assignments can be completed in-class, on home computers, ipads, and sometimes on smartphones. Computers are also available in the library after-school until 4pm and during tutorials periods.
