12/7 - 6pm - Shayna Weiss "Radical Moderates: A New History of Israeli Haredim (Ultra Orthodoxy)" IN-PERSON @ 14A Washington Mews

By focusing on a small but loud minority of voices, scholars have often depicted  Israeli Haredim as separatist and radically anti-Zionists uninterested in the rest of Israeli society.  However, by looking at the first two decades of Israeli history, we can see a different picture--a mainstream Haredi community that was determined to be part of the fledgling state, despite their theological misgivings. In this talk, Dr Weiss will examine these "radical moderates" and how their activism laid the groundwork for battles of religion and state that still trouble Israel until the present day.

11/1 - 6pm -  Chuck Freilich, "Israel and the Cyber Threat: How the Startup Nation Became a Global Cyber Power" - WEBINAR

This is the remarkable story of how a country with the population of NYC has become one of the world’s top cyber powers. Israel is subject to a nearly constant barrage of cyber attacks, from Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas. A successful attack on Israel’s electric, communications or transportation systems, could shut down the economy and severely disrupt Israel’s military capabilities. The talk, based on a forthcoming book, presents the cyber threat Israel faces and its response, including the governmental institutions, cyber education programs and cyber industry it has established. The talk further addresses the role of cyber in Israel’s military strategy, including the “Stuxnet” attack and others. No technological background is necessary.

11/5 - Other Israel Film Festival - "The Soldier's Opinion" - Screening and Panel Discussion

The Taub Center and Other Israel Film Festival present THE SOLDIER’S OPINION, which opens a window into the most intimate thoughts of soldiers on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, morality and brutality in war, and Ashkenazi-Mizrahi relations. The film sketches the alternative history of Israel that the report offers, and reveals what actions those who read it chose to take. There will be a discussion with the documentary producers, including NYU alumni Prof. Shay Haznaki, at Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan on Sat, Nov 5 at 4:30PM

The code nyu22 will give a 20% discount for all tickets - including full festival passes.

11/8 - 6pm -  Chuck Freilich, "Israel and a Rapidly Changing World: Iran, Ukraine, Lebanon and More" - WEBINAR

Israel faces a number of critical challenges. The Iranian nuclear program is expanding rapidly, even as negotiations for a renewed deal have foundered. Is a deal worthwhile and achievable, and if not what are the options? Israel reacted cautiously to the Ukrainian crisis, criticizing Russia and expressing support for Ukraine, but refusing to provide weapons. Should Israel do more? Israel and Lebanon concluded a landmark maritime agreement, which will allow them to proceed with gas exploration and hopefully reduce the dangers of conflict. What is the agreement about and what are its ramifications? The talk will address these and other issues.
This event has concluded. It was recorded and will be posted on our website.

11/15 - 6pm -  Chuck Freilich, "US-Israeli Relations Following the Elections" - WEBINAR

Little is more critical to Israel’s future than the relationship with the US. Both Israel and the US will hold critical elections in early November. Former premier Netanyahu may head a radical right-wing coalition. The Republican Party may take control of Congress, with critical ramifications for 2024. Whatever the outcomes, the elections will have a major impact on the future of the “special relationship”, including Israel’s efforts to conclude a new 10 year military aid package, how the two countries address the Iranian challenge, the future of the peace process and prospects for a two state solution, and much more.

11/29 -6pm - Yitzhak Conforti - "From Religious Holiness to National Sanctity: Zionism and the Hebrew Bible" - WEBINAR

This lecture focuses on the role of the Hebrew Bible in Jewish nationalism and early Zionist thought from the 1880s to 1948. I will examine the connection between Zionism and the Bible in the context of modern nationalism research from a cultural approach. The focus on the Bible gave Zionism the components it lacked: territory and language. Unlike other ancient Jewish texts in which national aspects were marginalized, the Bible set a model for the creation of a modern nation-state. To the Zionists, the Bible was a guide to forming the “New Jew.”
