Background: The Optimist Club of Greater Vienna is offering a $2,500 scholarship for graduating high school seniors and post-graduates through age 20 who reside in the Greater Vienna, VA area and plan to pursue education or training in skilled trades or other career-focused pathways that do not require a four-year college degree.
Eligibility:
- Reside within the FCPS school pyramid boundaries for Madison, Marshall, or Oakton High Schools.
- Be a high school graduate or post-graduate age 20 or younger who has not earned a post-secondary degree.
- Plan to enroll in an accredited program that provides workforce-focused training for a specific career or skilled trade that does not lead to a bachelor’s degree. Exceptions to the age limit apply to prior scholarship recipients seeking a second year of support and to individuals who served on active military duty during the eligibility period (scholarship must be used after honorable discharge).
Eligible Fields (examples of skilled trades and career pathways that do NOT require a four-year degree):
- Automotive Technology: Auto mechanic, body repair, etc.
- Construction & Equipment Operations
- Cosmetology & Beauty Services: Beautician, esthetician, etc.
- Culinary Arts: Chef, culinary practitioner
- Cybersecurity
- Data Center Operations
- Dental Careers: Dental hygienist, dental assistant
- Electrical Trades: Electrician, electrical construction
- Engineering Technologies
- HVAC/Refrigeration Technology
- Information Technology (IT)
- Landscape Architecture &Turf Management
- Medical & Pharmaceutical Technologies: EMT, MRI tech, nursing assistant/LPN, patient care assistant, respiratory therapist, etc.
- Skilled Trades: Carpentry, masonry, plumbing, welding, etc.
- Veterinary Sciences: Veterinary assistants, veterinary technologist
Award: The $2,500 scholarship will be paid directly to the educational or training institution. Recipients may use the award from the date it is granted through the fall semester or quarter of the following calendar year.
